Set in France during World War II, the story follows two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, who are living separate lives as the war unfolds.
Vianne Mauriac lives in the French countryside with her husband and young daughter. When her husband is sent to fight at the front, she is left to care for her family as German soldiers occupy her village and, eventually, her own home. Vianne is forced to make impossible choices every day just to survive, facing the difficult realities of occupation and the constant threat of danger. She is a woman who chooses to endure and protect her loved ones at all costs.
Isabelle Rossignol, her rebellious and spirited younger sister, is the opposite of Vianne. Impulsive and defiant, Isabelle joins the Resistance to fight against the Germans, adopting the codename "the Nightingale." She risks her life to help Allied airmen escape enemy territory, all while navigating a country torn apart by war.
