This is the first book in the Fire & Metal series. The story follows a young woman named Brynn, who belongs to the Alaha, a seafaring people exiled to the sea after a war with the land-dwelling Kenta. Once a year, the Alaha are allowed to visit a market on Kenta land. During one of these visits, Brynn accidentally breaks a long-standing peace treaty and has a pivotal encounter with an enemy Kenta soldier named Acker.
